This is excellent music for my outdated generation. Melanie's music has a lot of depth.
I was a huge Melanie fan "back in the day" and was considering attending one of her live concerts but my wife and friends had never even heard of her. However, there are a couple of songs here that I thoroughly enjoyed but I'll probably not be adding this album to iTunes and it will join hundreds of other CDs that I only listen to very sporadically. Bought this album to acquaint them with her music (and reaquaint myself) and was surprised to find that I didn't enjoy her music nearly as much as I had back in the 60s and 70s. Guess that our tastes really do change sometimes as we get older. Bottom line: a decent enough grouping of her best stuff and probably a must have for any true Melanie fan but only okay recording quality. by the way, my wife and friends weren't enthralled with her music so we're not going to attend her concert.
In addition, "Look What They've Done To My Song, Ma" is absolutely beautiful even though it's not really the happiest of themes; I love this song and Melanie does great justice to this number as she delivers it without letting go of a superfluous note. Her earlier years as a singer/songwriter/guitar player during the 1960s and 1970s were very productive; but as Amazon notes these tunes still sound just great. "Nickel Song" is quite good; and listen for Melanie to outdo even herself on "Good Book. Along with the harmonica this has a folk music flavor to it mixed with just a touch of light rock--and wow, what a great effect.
The live track of "Psychology" is somewhat humorous and Melanie's voice is as clear as a bell--great. "Summer Of Love II" makes a strong opening number for this CD. We also get a completely unedited "Lay Down (Candles In The Rain);" I always liked this song and it showcases Melanie as one of the best. Beautiful People: The Greatest Hits of Melanie has some pretty awesome songs performed by Melanie (well, actually, her name is Melanie Safka) who continues to tour to this day. Fortunately she continues to tour and work hard to this day; and if you can catch her in concert it'll be a terrific experience. "Lover's Cross" is very pretty; and I really like Melanie's cover of "Ruby Tuesday." What can't Melanie do.
"Good Book" has a lush musical arrangement; I particularly like that piano and flute work as Melanie and the chorus sing this faultlessly. "Animal Crackers" is very well done; the piano works wonders for this tune and Melanie never skips a beat.
I highly recommend this album for Melanie's fans and of course it's a great starter CD for people just getting to know the artistry of this remarkably gifted woman. The quality of the sound is excellent and I really like that artwork. The album starts with a fantastic number, "Summer Of Love II." Melanie sings this to perfection and that guitar work does a lot for the musical arrangement.
In addition, "Together Alone" uses the percussion brilliantly while Melanie sings this with a lot of feeling; and there's yet another gem when Melanie does "Peace Will Come (According To Plan)." "Peace Will Come (According To Plan)" has a folk music flavor to it that is very appealing and it's a tough song to forget especially in Melanie's capable hands. "Look What They've Done To My Song, Ma" is clearly another highlight of this album."Brand New Key" charms me with its beauty; you may recognize this when you hear it--it's quite a good song and it has a catchy beat that will get your feet tapping along as Melanie does this one up right.
"Love To Lose Again" has Melanie singing with a wonderful choir in the background--not that Melanie needed it but they sound wonderful anyway. The CD also ends well with Melanie performing "I Will Get Over;" this strong ballad lacks nothing--it's all THAT good.Melanie has shared so much of her exceptional talent with us--and we're better off for it.
I have been looking for Melanie's song: Animal Crackers fora while and three others. This CD is great. Thank You. This CD has all three that I waslooking for. Thanks again.Cherese
I enjoy each of Melanie's albums, and every time I listen to her music, I reminisce to when I first heard her music. Thank You Melanie, for your excellent music.
